News: Plaque to Shackleton to be unveiled in Athy
At 1pm on Saturday the 23rd October the Hon Alexandra Shackleton will unveil a plaque at Athy Town Hall dedicated to her grandfather Ernest Shackleton. The plaque has been commissioned by the National Committee for Science & Engineering Commemorative Plaques. The national plaques project was initiated in 1996 with the idea of erecting plaques to scientists, engineers, explorers and others in order to promote a wider appreciation of the country’s scientific and technical achievements, in addition to the existing recognition of Ireland’s literary, artistic and musical traditions. To date over 50 plaques have been erected across Ireland. This plaque will be the first public monument dedicated to the Kildare born explorer in the county of his birth and a fitting way to mark the 10th year of the Shackleton Autumn School
